About The Firm
Reedman Law is seeking a litigation associate with two to four years of post-call experience to join our Vancouver practice.
We are an independent boutique focused on commercial litigation, insolvency, restructuring and asset recovery. Our work involves commercial disputes, receiverships and bankruptcy proceedings, foreclosure and security disputes, and claims involving fraud and the recovery of assets.
This opportunity will suit a lawyer who has developed a foundation in litigation and wants to build stronger advocacy skills, work directly with clients and take increasing responsibility for files.
Requirements
The role
Working closely with Cody Reedman and our team, you will take day-to-day responsibility for matters appropriate to your experience and contribute to more complex proceedings.
Your work will include:
Assessing facts, researching legal issues and helping clients understand their options, risks and likely costs.
Developing litigation plans and advancing files through pleadings, document discovery, applications, negotiation and resolution.
Preparing pleadings, affidavits, written submissions, opinions and settlement documents.
Preparing for and conducting examinations for discovery, chambers applications and mediations, with guidance appropriate to your experience.
Assisting with trials, appeals and more complex insolvency and commercial proceedings.
Maintaining direct client communication and keeping clients informed about progress, next steps, fees and funding requirements.
Working effectively with other lawyers and support staff, giving clear instructions and keeping deadlines and follow-up items current.
As your skills develop, you will have opportunities to assume greater responsibility for strategy, advocacy and client relationships.
What you bring
You will have:
Two to four years of post-call experience, including recent, substantive civil or commercial litigation work.
Strong legal research, analytical and writing skills.
A working knowledge of the BC Supreme Court Civil Rules and experience preparing litigation documents.
Some experience with court appearances, discoveries, mediation or trial preparation, together with a clear interest in developing further.
Sound judgment, careful preparation and reliable file-management habits.
The ability to communicate practical advice clearly and professionally.
A collaborative approach, openness to feedback and the judgment to seek assistance when needed.
Experience in insolvency, restructuring, foreclosure, debt disputes or asset recovery would be an asset. We also welcome litigators from other practice areas who bring transferable skills and a genuine interest in our work.
You must be a practicing member in good standing of the Law Society of British Columbia, or eligible to become one before starting.
Developing your practice
You will work directly with the Principal and other lawyers, with opportunities to discuss strategy, receive feedback on written work and prepare for advocacy alongside more experienced counsel.
We want you to develop the skills needed to manage a matter from initial assessment through resolution: understanding the evidence, exercising commercial judgment, advising clients and delivering effective advocacy.
You will also have support to develop professional relationships and participate in relevant continuing education and business-development activities. An existing client following is welcome but is not required.
Remuneration and benefits
We offer an annual base salary of $130,000–$150,000, depending on relevant experience, demonstrated skills and the responsibilities you are ready to assume.
The package also includes:
Eligibility for a performance bonus.
Employer-paid extended health and dental coverage.
A health spending account.
Three weeks of paid annual vacation.
Support for approved continuing professional development.
Annual compensation and development reviews.
Our annual billable-hour target is 1,450 hours, alongside expectations for effective client service, sound file management and contribution to the team.
Benefits are subject to applicable plan eligibility and firm policies.
