Litigation Paralegal

About The Firm

Reedman Law is an independent Vancouver boutique focused on commercial litigation, insolvency, restructuring and asset recovery.

We are seeking a Litigation Paralegal to work closely with our lawyers on disputes involving businesses, financial distress, debt, security and competing claims to assets.

This position offers meaningful involvement in files from initial investigation and document collection through discoveries, applications, mediation and trial. You will take responsibility for assigned aspects of litigation under lawyer supervision, helping turn substantial records into organized evidence and well-prepared court materials.

The role will suit someone who enjoys understanding the facts of a case, identifying what is missing and following work through to completion.

Requirements

The work

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Document collection and production: Coordinate collection from clients and other sources; organize, review and summarize records; prepare draft lists of documents; and flag relevance, privilege and confidentiality issues for lawyer review.

  • Evidence and factual analysis: Prepare chronologies, document summaries and supporting schedules. Review correspondence, corporate records and financial documents to identify material events, transactions and gaps requiring further investigation.

  • Drafting: Prepare draft correspondence, pleadings, affidavits, applications, orders and other litigation documents from instructions and precedents for lawyer review.

  • Discovery preparation: Organize documents and examination materials, summarize transcripts, and maintain and follow up on undertakings and outstanding document requests.

  • Applications, mediation and trial: Prepare records, briefs, exhibit collections and electronic hearing materials, and assist with witness, expert and hearing arrangements under lawyer direction.

  • Research and searches: Conduct factual and legal research as assigned, obtain court and registry records, and organize land title, corporate, Personal Property Registry and bankruptcy search results.

  • File progression: Track assigned procedural steps, filing and service requirements, deadlines and follow-up items, confirming requirements with the responsible lawyer and raising issues promptly.

  • Insolvency and recovery matters: Assist with organizing creditor information, service lists, asset records and supporting materials for receiverships, bankruptcies, restructuring proceedings and enforcement work.

  • Team contribution: Work with our legal assistants to coordinate document preparation and filing, maintain useful precedents and checklists, and share practical knowledge.

  • Time and budgets: Record time accurately and complete assigned work with attention to agreed priorities, deadlines and budgets.

The balance of responsibilities will reflect your experience and the matters underway.

What you bring

We are looking for:

  • At least three years of substantive litigation paralegal experience, preferably in British Columbia. We welcome applicants with substantially more experience.

  • A paralegal certificate, diploma or degree, or a comparable combination of training and demonstrated experience.

  • A sound working knowledge of the BC Supreme Court Civil Rules, document discovery and litigation procedures.

  • Experience preparing court documents and supporting applications, discoveries, mediations or trials.

  • The ability to organize substantial document collections and produce clear, accurate summaries.

  • Strong writing, proofreading and analytical skills.

  • Sound judgment about confidentiality, privilege, competing priorities and when to seek lawyer direction.

  • A collaborative approach and professional communication with clients, colleagues and other participants in a file.

Experience in commercial litigation, insolvency, foreclosure, fraud or judgment enforcement would be valuable. Candidates from other litigation practices with transferable skills are encouraged to apply; prior insolvency experience is not essential.

Confidence with Microsoft 365, PDF tools and electronic document management is important. Experience with NetDocuments, litigation databases or eDiscovery platforms, together with Court Services Online, LTSA, BC OnLine and PPR searches, would be an asset.
